File attachments in Top Producer

Document Actions
Do you sometimes receive strange file attachments that you don't know what to do with? This article has some tips and links to resources to help!

Weird file attachment #1: Winmail.dat files

Winmail.dat files are created by Microsoft Outlook when the person sending you a message from Outlook sends files in the "Rich Text" or sometimes in the "HTML" format.  These files contain formatting instructions specific to Outlook, and are ignored by Top Producer.  I have generally found that as long as you get the body text in the messages that have winmail.dat files attached, these files really don't matter and you can ignore them.  You can ask the sender of the files to send you files in text format, and this is an easy setting to change in Outlook.

For more information about these kinds of files, here is a more in-depth article explaining them.

Weird file attachment #2: AttachedMessage.eml files

These files are sent by Outlook Express, and can only be opened by Outlook Express.  To open the files, download the message and double click on it- as long as you have Outlook Express installed you should be able to view the message.
